The Case for Starting at Sunrise

Couples usually open with the same question. Where should we take our engagement photos? The honest answer is that the location matters less than the hour you pick.
Nyri and Greg shot downtown, which is what half of Cleveland chooses, and their gallery looks the way it does because we started early instead of at sunset. Soft light, quiet streets, and a couple of hours where the city was effectively theirs.
One
The sun sits low and does the work
Early in the morning the sun is low enough to wrap around a face rather than fall on it from above. Skin reads naturally. Shadows stay soft. You can see it in these frames in the gentle handoff between light and shadow, and in the color, which needed very little from me afterward.
Light does more for a photograph than a location does. A plain stone wall at seven in the morning will beat a famous building at noon.
The location matters less than the hour you pick.
Two
The city belongs to you for a couple of hours
Downtown has the architecture, the stone, the fountains, and real variety within a few blocks. It also has people, and by late afternoon a good part of any session goes to waiting for someone to walk out of the background.
Early in the morning none of that applies. The sidewalks are empty. We moved between several locations without hurrying once, and nothing here had to be timed around a stranger.

What the posing is actually for
Posing has a bad name because most of it is bad. Done properly it is small. A shift in posture, where a hand rests, how much space sits between two people. Those adjustments change a photograph more than the address does.
I set Nyri and Greg up, then asked them to move, talk, walk somewhere. The frames that made the gallery are mostly the ones that happened after the instruction rather than during it, which is the point of giving one in the first place.
