The hours before a ceremony are mostly waiting, and the photographs from them are mostly about what people do while they wait. Cufflinks. A veil lifted and set down again. A ring passed between hands so someone can look at it one more time.

The cathedral decides most of the light. It comes through the windows high up and lands in long shapes on the stone, which means the work is finding where it falls and waiting there rather than adding anything of my own.

Family photographs and portraits happened near the Cleveland Museum of Art. Bright, clean light, and a setting that does not date, which is most of what you want when the pictures have to hold up for decades rather than for a season.

The celebration carried on at the Westin downtown, calm and joyful at once, which is a harder combination than it sounds. What I was watching for were the things that pass too fast to notice while they are happening: a hand squeeze, a laugh during a toast, a deep breath before the dance floor filled.

The best pictures come out of trust and patience. Photograph what is real, film what is felt, and stay long enough for the day to stop noticing you.
