The Hour Matters More Than the Place

Couples start by asking where. Parks, downtown, the gardens, the waterfront. Location is a fair question and I am glad to answer it, though it is rarely the thing that decides whether the photographs are any good.
Zana and Ali’s session came down to the hour. We shot in the last stretch of daylight, when the sun is low enough to reach people sideways instead of falling on them from above.
Light
What low sun does that a good location cannot
Directional light wraps around a face and leaves clean skin tones behind. It separates people from whatever is behind them without any work from me. You will not get that at one in the afternoon anywhere in Cleveland, and no park is good enough to make up the difference.
The same park photographed at noon and photographed an hour before sunset can feel like two different places. That is most of the argument, and it is why the first thing I ask about a session is the time rather than the spot.

Editing
Clean color, and why it holds up
Editing trends age badly. Heavy filters and hard color grading look current for about two years, and then they date the whole gallery, and the people in it start looking like a period rather than like themselves.
So the color stays clean. Natural skin, balanced light, white that stays white. Zana’s dress fills most of the frame in half of these pictures, so the highlights had to hold their detail or the fabric would have gone flat and taken the dress with it. Nothing in the editing competes with the two of them, which is the entire job.
