Sophia changed dresses twice during this session, and neither felt like a costume change. The first, a strapless gown with a soft ivory shawl, worked beautifully against old stone doors and arched entryways. The second, a ruffled dress that moved every time she walked, was made for the garden paths and the stone staircase tucked into the trees nearby.
First dress
Stone doors and arched entryways
Cleveland has no shortage of good backdrops for an engagement session, and this one leaned into the city’s older architecture: heavy carved doors, worn stone steps, limestone columns deep enough to stand inside. A gown with this much structure wants a wall with some weight behind it.
Joseph spent most of the evening watching her rather than the camera.
The work
Paying attention to what is already there
Joseph watching her the way he did made the job easy. Documentary storytelling with editorial direction means I am not manufacturing romance for a photograph. I am paying attention to what is already in front of me, the hand on the cheek, the laugh mid-step, the moment right before a dip, and giving it a setting that matches the feeling instead of competing with it.
Second dress · Last hour of light
The garden paths and the staircase in the trees
Locations like this photograph differently depending on the time of day, so we planned around the last hour of light. That is where the warm, low glow across most of these frames comes from, and it is why the second dress waited until the end. A dress that moves needs somewhere to move, and it needs light coming in low enough to catch it.
