Three Looks Through Downtown

Photographing seniors is something I look forward to every year. Downtown gives you modern glass and old stone within a few blocks of each other, and a senior who brings three changes of clothes can use all of it in one evening. Marta did.
First look
Starting with the architecture
We began with the buildings. Bold lines, and sunlight coming off glass and stone soft enough to work with. On the steps of the Old Courthouse she stood against the columns, which make about as strong a backdrop as this city offers for a single portrait.
Every session is built around the person in front of the camera.
Second look
East 4th Street
From there we walked to East 4th. The lights strung overhead, the narrow width, and the texture of the storefronts give portraits a livelier feel than the civic buildings do, and they put a recognizable piece of Cleveland in the frame without making the picture about the street.
Third look · Golden hour
The embroidered dress, and the last of the light
She saved the embroidered dress and the flower crown for the end, which was the right call. As the sun dropped we got the low golden light every photographer waits for, and it suited that look better than anything earlier in the evening would have.
That soft glow is the part families tend to keep. It warms the skin, it separates her from the street behind her, and it does not look like a filter, because it is not one.
