Between Seasons at the Library and the Museum
A and R, photographed in the weeks when winter had ended and spring had not yet arrived.

Winter had ended and spring had not arrived. The city sat between the two, cold in the shadows and soft wherever the light reached, which is a better condition for photographs than either season on its own.
They came dressed for something that would last. A well-fitted black suit with clean lines, and a light white dress that moved whenever the wind did.

Stone walls and quiet
We started at the library. The light fell in long sheets across the floor and we walked through it. At one point they laughed, the sound went up into the room and came back, and I photographed that instead of what I had been setting up.
There was no script and no asking for smiles. I watched, said very little, and gave direction only when the light wanted something specific. They already knew how to be with each other, so the job was to leave that alone.
I spend most of a session watching, and I press the shutter when something true happens.

White stone against a grey sky
From the library we went to the museum, where the white stone met a grey sky and the lagoon sat still. They stood close to the water and neither of them said much. What I photographed there was the space between them and the way it closed.
There was movement too. Her dress caught the wind, his hand went to her waist, a laugh arrived out of nowhere. Those are the frames that stayed in the gallery.
Both of these buildings have clean symmetry and soft light, and both ask very little of a couple beyond showing up. That is most of what makes a location good.
