Real Wedding

A Coptic Egyptian Wedding at Via Roma

Ogena and Kerolos, from a hotel room on Public Square to a ballroom done entirely in white.

Cleveland, Ohio · October 2026

Ogena and Kerolos were married in the fall at St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church in Seven Hills, Ohio, and celebrated with their guests at Via Roma Grand Ballroom in North Royalton. I photographed the day from getting ready at Hotel Cleveland through the last dances of the reception, in natural light, in the documentary style I have worked in since 2013.

What follows is the day in order, the places it moved through, and the thinking behind the photographs. If you are planning a Coptic or Egyptian wedding in Northeast Ohio, there is a practical section near the end.

11:30 AM · Public Square

Getting ready at Hotel Cleveland

The day began at Hotel Cleveland, Autograph Collection, on Public Square downtown. Hair and makeup were finished by the time coverage started, so Ogena and her bridesmaids were photographed first in satin pajamas. That was her idea and it was the right one.

The best photograph of the morning is a book of letters written to the bride, read aloud on the bed while six women laughed too hard to hold still.

Kerolos and his groomsmen had their own half hour next, with jackets, cufflinks, and a few quiet minutes before the first look in the hotel lobby.

Six women laughed too hard to hold still.

1:30 PM · University Circle

Portraits at the Cleveland Museum of Art

From downtown it is about ten minutes to University Circle. The Cleveland Museum of Art has a colonnaded Neoclassical exterior, marble terraces, and mature trees that turn gold in early October, which makes it one of the strongest wedding portrait locations in Northeast Ohio.

The couple walked the terraces in late afternoon sun. Most of their portraits came from the moments between poses: her hand on his face, his forehead against hers, a laugh that interrupted the frame. Their bridal party joined them here for group portraits before everyone drove to the church.

3:30 PM · Seven Hills

The Coptic ceremony at St. Mark

St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church in Seven Hills hosted the ceremony. Coptic Orthodox weddings carry their own rhythm and ritual, including gold crowns, embroidered ceremonial capes, and the exchange of rings before the altar. The photography follows that pace, with wide frames of the sanctuary and close ones of hands and faces. A white floral arch stood behind the couple, and the church placed no restrictions on photography.

6:00 PM · North Royalton

White on white at Via Roma

Via Roma Grand Ballroom and Event Center, on Ridge Road in North Royalton, was designed around a single color. Ogena and Kerolos chose white and the room followed: tall floral centerpieces on mirrored tables, candles stepped up behind the sweetheart table, sculpted ribbons of light beside the dance floor, and a four tier cake dotted with pearls that echoed the beading on Ogena’s veil.

Photographing a room like this before guests arrive takes patience. Soft light, clean lines, and a long lens for the centerpieces keep the decor looking the way the couple planned it.

7:00 PM · 200 guests

The reception

When 200 guests filled the room the energy changed completely. Ogena and Kerolos entered to a crowd on its feet, and the dance floor stayed full for hours. A fez appeared, a sword went up over the crowd, and Kerolos was lifted onto his friends’ shoulders while Ogena laughed with the bouquet still in her hand. Their first dance was to an Arabic song they chose.

Reception photography at a celebration like this means staying close, staying low, and shooting wide enough to include the faces watching from the tables.

Those faces are often the best part of the gallery.

The work

How I photograph weddings

The approach is documentary at its core. Natural window light indoors, golden hour light outdoors, minimal direction, and a patient eye for the second after the pose ends. One image from this wedding, a bride and groom seen from directly above on a dark staircase, was made in a quiet minute between the louder halves of the day.

I came to photography from philosophy and theology. The work reflects a belief that a photograph should preserve what a moment felt like as well as how it looked.

Practical

Planning photography for a Coptic or Egyptian wedding in Cleveland

A few notes from this wedding that apply to others.

  1. Ask the church about photography rules early. St. Mark had none, but every parish differs, and the answer shapes where the photographer can stand.
  2. Consider family portraits before the ceremony. Both families met the couple at the Cleveland Museum of Art, which kept the church schedule clear and left the window after the ceremony for any remaining groupings.
  3. Put young children first on the family list. They have the shortest patience.
  4. Budget real time between locations. Downtown to University Circle to Seven Hills to North Royalton is a long afternoon on the road.
  5. Plan reception coverage around the dancing. At a celebration this size, the dancing is the story.
