A proposal on the Fourth of July carries some weight. It needs a simple plan and careful timing, and on this day everything lined up.
They chose golden hour. The clouds cleared, the sun dropped low across Wade Lagoon and came through the trees, and the air was still. He asked, she said yes, and the day did not need anything else.

The job during a proposal is to be in the right place and otherwise invisible. Nobody is directed, nothing is repeated, and the only decision I make is where to stand before it starts. Everything in this first set happened on its own.

After
The ring, and the Cultural Gardens
Once the ring was on, the session turned into something closer to a collaboration. We walked to the Cultural Gardens for the stone steps, the fountains, and the colonnades, which are among the best things this city gives a photographer within one walk.
Last light
Clean symmetry at the museum
We finished at the Cleveland Museum of Art, where the symmetry and the open air do most of the composing for you. They left afterward to celebrate with friends. We did not stay for the fireworks, and nothing about the evening suffered for it.
