A Surprise Proposal at the Cleveland Museum of Art

Cleveland, Ohio · Spring 2026

There is a specific kind of light that shows up along the reflecting pool at the Cleveland Museum of Art in early spring, right when the cherry blossoms are still holding on. H picked that light on purpose. M had no idea any of it was coming.

I was there to document it, not to stage it. Nobody can direct someone’s real reaction to a question like that, and I would not want to try. When H dropped to one knee by the water, the job was to be close enough to catch it and far enough away that neither of them had to think about me at all.

The work

A proposal session has two very different halves

Most people only think about the first one. The first half is the moment itself. Documentary work, plain and simple. I watch, I wait, I stay ready, and I let whatever happens happen. M’s reaction, the walk up to the fountain, the second right after the ring comes out. None of that gets posed because none of it can be.

The second half starts once the question has been answered. This is where a little editorial direction earns its place. I walk the couple through the surrounding grounds, the museum steps, the cherry trees, while the excitement is still sitting right on the surface. A hand on a shoulder, a quiet laugh, someone still catching their breath.

I shape the frame without shaping the feeling.

The location

Why the museum works so well for this

The museum’s front lawn gives you marble steps, tall columns, and a reflecting pool that mirrors the sky on a calm day. It reads differently depending on the season. Cherry blossoms in April, open green in summer, a quieter and starker version in late fall. Couples planning a proposal here are usually drawn to the same thing: a backdrop that already looks intentional, so the moment does not have to compete with its surroundings.

It is one of a handful of places around Cleveland I recommend often, alongside the Cultural Gardens and the Edgewater bluffs. Each one photographs differently depending on the hour, and part of the job before the session even starts is helping a couple pick the right light for the place they want.

Practical

If you are the one planning to ask

Three things matter for the photography. Pick a place that means something to the two of you, not just one that photographs well. Give me the real timeline, so I can find you the right light. And trust that I will stay far enough back that the moment stays yours.
