Punch Brothers Jam Session | Photographing Music Events in Oberlin

Music has an uncanny ability to lift up the spirit. This time of the year does not naturally uplift the spirit. Cold weather and shorter daylight calls for our own creativity in making the days fun. Thus, things like seasonal foods, beverages, decorations and music remind us of the best of times. I like Fall and winter, for this is the period when we experience the best of what we make as humans. We create traditions that tie to specific elements characterized by the season. Thus, it’s hard to like cinnamon in July, but it’s especially pleasing in December.

It is also good point out that the best thing about being cold is warming up. It does feel great!!! But there are many ways of warming up. One of them, is to get together with a bunch of friends and people who share the same passion for music, and jam. Punch Brothers, a band consisting of 5 members : Chris Thile, Gabe Witcher, Noam Pikelny, Chris Eldridge and Paul Cowert, created an unforgettable atmosphere at Oberlin College this winter. It is not easy to describe for a photographer what a high energy jamming can do to people. Everyone who was there felt festive and was electrified by the music. Forget about the cold gloom that was outdoors. Music lifts up the spirit!
